Momostenango Market & Colonial Churches

Leaving from: Quetzaltenango

The best days to visit this town located 25 km from Quetzaltenango are on a Wednesdays or Sundays, the main market days. Here you will find the famous woolen sheets and other woolen products. Because of this Momostenango is a popular place to visit.

Momostenango is also noted for its adherence to the ancient Mayan calendar and for its observance of traditional rites.

We continue to San Andres Xecul. This yellow church is probably the most famous church in Central America. We also visit a place where you can see how the local materials are painted which are used for the typical weavings.  We also visit a Mayan altar and  San Simon (Maximon a local Maya Saint).

In San Cristobal Totonicapan we will visit the church and the next door “Monasterio” as well as the place where indigenous women do their laundry, standing with their feet in the water. We end our tour in Salcaja where we visit a local family who makes 'Caldo de frutas' a local drink in Guatemala.

Our tour ends back in Quetzaltenango
